MALVIN WALD
Died Mar. 6, 2008

Malvin Wald, who conceived and was a co-writer of the gritty 1948 crime film “The Naked City,” a prototype for modern police dramas, including the popular television show of the same name, died on Thursday in Sherman Oaks, Calif. He was 90 and lived in Sherman Oaks.

His death was confirmed by his son, Alan.
Ending with the famous lines “There are eight million stories in the Naked City. This has been one of them,” “The Naked City,” which was written with Albert Maltz, was inspired by Mr. Wald’s adolescent years on the streets of Brooklyn.
“No one had done a film where the real hero was a hard-working police detective, like the ones I knew in Brooklyn,” Mr. Wald told The Hollywood Reporter last year. “We knew we were making a new genre that became the police procedural.”
Besides its television spin-off, which ran from 1958 to 1963, many other films and TV shows drew inspiration and tone from “The Naked City,” including “Dragnet,” “Hill Street Blues” and “CSI.”
Mr. Wald was nominated for the Academy Award for screenwriting for “The Naked City,” which won two other Oscars, for its cinematography and editing.
It was one of more than 150 scripts by Mr. Wald. His other film credits, for writing or story, include “Al Capone,” (1959); “Battle Taxi” (1955), about the first use of helicopters in war; and “Ten Gentlemen From West Point” (1942), about the early years of the military academy. He wrote television scripts for, among other shows, “Perry Mason,” “Peter Gunn,” “Have Gun — Will Travel,” “My Friend Flicka,” “Daktari” and “Playhouse 90.”

TINA LAGOSTENA BASSI

Dal 1971 al 1972 è Incaricata Diritto Navigazione Interna all’Università di Parma. Dal 1973 al 1975 è Consulente del Ministero di Grazia e Giustizia, Ufficio Riforme e nel 1983 è Delegata al Convegno Mondiale per la Pace di Praga. Fa parte del Coordinamento Nazionale Giuriste (CNG).
Ha partecipato come osservatrice ad una delegazione Internazionale in Turchia per i processi contro i Sindacalisti. Ha fatto parte di un osservatorio dell’ONU per la tutela dei diritti dell’uomo. Vice Presidente dell’Associazione Giuriste Italiane, sezione di Roma. Fondatrice e Membro del Comitato Scientifico CESAR (Centro Studi Assicurativi e Ricerche). Socia fondatrice di Telefono Rosa. E’ coautrice della collana giuridica “La responsabilità civile”, editore Giuffrè, per la stessa collana ha scritto altri volumi tra cui: “La liquidazione del danno”, “La responsabilità: biografia e giurisprudenza”. Ha pubblicato insieme a Manuela Moroli “L’Avvocato delle Donne - Dodici storie di ordinaria violenza”, Mondatori. Eletta alla Camera dei Deputati nel 1994 - XII Legislatura. Membro della Commissione Giustizia della Camera. Membro della Giunta Autorizzazioni a Procedere della Camera dei Deputati. Presidente della Commissione Pari Opportunità tra uomo e donna dal 28 giugno 1994 al 30 settembre 1995.
Rappresentante per l’Italia al Comitato Consultivo per la parità presso l’Unione Europea.

SEMKA SOKOLOVIC BERTOK

(Sarajevo, 22. decembra 1935. - Zagreb, 4. mart 2008., )
Malo je poznato da Semkina porodica vuče porijeklo od legendarnog Mehmed paše Sokolovića te da joj je i djed bio paša. Rođena Sarajka, koja se u mladosti bavila mačevanjem, u Zagrebu je upisala dramsku akademiju.
Impresionirala je dr. Branka Gavellu, postala njegov asistent i zaposlila se u Zagrebačkom dramskom kazalištu (poslije preimenovano po velikom redatelju). Bila je majstor velikih scena. Svojim ne rijetko otresitim, strogim nastupom u nekoliko minuta ili sekundi bi se usjekla gledatelju u pamćenje, čak jače nego neki glavni glumci. U komediji Rajka Grlića “U raljama života” igrala je tetku iz Bosanske Krupe tako sočno da su i publika i kritičari zažalili što oko nje nije usredotočen cijeli film.
Prve važne uloge zahvaljuje Fadilu Hadžiću, koji je u njoj prepoznao vrsnu karakternu glumicu. Ostvarila je fine vinjete u “Službenom položaju” (1964.), “Drugoj strani medalje” (1965.), “Protestu” (1967.) i “Divljim anđelima” (1969.), međutim, da smo tada imali malo ozbiljniju kinematografiju, Semka bi stasala u našu Thelmu Ritter. Njezino geslo kao da je bilo “nema gluposti, nema glumatanja”, zbog čega su je i prigrlili redatelji nove generacije, ponajprije Goran Marković, koji joj je u filmu “Majstori, majstori” povjerio prvu veliku filmsku ulogu.

W.C. HEINZ
Died Feb. 27, 2008

Writer W.C. Heinz died at age 93. Mr. Heinz was a journalist who began his career in the 1930s. He was a renowned sports reporter who wrote of such greats as Babe Ruth and Rocky Marciano. Mr. Heinz was also a war correspondent stationed in Europe during WWII. Mr. Heinz wrote several novels. He and Dr. Richard Hornberger collaborated on the popular novel " M*A*S*H ." The book was published under the pen-name Richard Hooker. Robert Altman directed the film version. It later became one of the top TV series of the 1970s. Mr. Heinz appeared as himself in numerous episodes of " ESPN SportsCentury ." He also appeared in the Ken Burn's documentary " Jack Johnson: Unforgiven Blackness ."

MIKE SMITH
Died Feb. 28, 2008

Mike Smith, the lead singer of the British rock band " The Dave Clark 5 " died of pneumonia at age 64. Mr. Smith was hospitalized for most of the time following a 2003 fall which paralyzed him from the waist down. Mr. Smith was recently allowed to return home where he passed away. " The Dave Clark 5 " was part of the British Invasion which changed the face of Rock and Roll during the early 1960s. I was lucky enough to have older brothers and sisters in the early 1960s. I remember sneaking into their rooms while they were off to school and playing their 45rpm records. Two bands other than the Beatles caught my ear: " The Animals " and " The Dave Clark 5 ." I loved the music of " The Dave Clark 5 " and spent lots of time trying to impress the neighborhood girls by singing their hits. Ah, the life of a pre-school Romeo. " The Dave Clark 5 " scored hit after hit during the early and mid-1960s. Such songs as " Glad All Over ," " Bits and Pieces ," " Because ," " Do You Love Me ," " Catch Us If You Can ," " I Like It Like That " and made " The Dave Clark 5 " the biggest threat to the Beatles dominance of the billboard charts. Mike Smith played keyboards and was the lead singer. The band appeared a record 15-times on " The Ed Sullivan Show ." The band starred in the 1965 film " Catch Us If You Can ." John Boorman made his feature film directorial debut with the " Hard Day's Night " knock-off. A year earlier " The Dave Clark 5 " played a song during a musical cameo in the film " Get Yourself a College Girl ." Mr. Smith died on the eve of the band's induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. This is an honor that should have been granted years ago, even before the 2006 death of the band's saxophone player Denis Payton. Mr. Smith is at the top right of the picture.

JEFF HEALEY
Died Mar. 2, 2008

Blind guitar legend Jeff Healey died of cancer at age 41. Mr. Healey lost his sight to cancer when he was an infant. He began playing guitar at age 3 and became one of the world's foremost guitar virtuosos. Jeff Healey played rock, blues, jazz and classical guitar styles. He was about to release his first new blues/rock album in nearly a decade. For those who don't remember the late 1980s or early 1990s, YouTube is full of classic clips of Jeff Healey destroying the competition. I highly recommend checking out the video of Mr. Healey and the late Stevie Ray Vaught tearing up the song " Look at Little Sister ." One of my guilty pleasures is the Patrick Swayze B-movie " Road House ." Jeff Healey provided some great music and had respectable acting chops as Cody, the musician who rocked the bar. A fun, trashy movie, made all the better for Jeff Healey's presence. Jeff Healey performed on numerous TV shows worldwide. There was a corny old song called " Rock and Roll Heaven " in which the singer lamented about those who have passed away. I'm sure if anyone were to rerecord that song today it would contain a lyric about Jeff Healey. Prayers of comfort for his family and friends, especially his two young children.

PERRY LOPEZ
Died Feb. 14, 2008

Perry López, un veterano actor de cine y de televisión que actuó en “Chinatown” y “Star Trek”, falleció en Los Ángeles luego de una larga enfermedad.
López tenía 78 años cuando murió de cáncer de pulmón en el Centro de Rehabilitación de Beverly Hills, expresó el actor James Victor, amigo y albacea de López.
Nacido en Nueva York, López arrancó su carrera en el escenario con una actuación sin créditos en “The Creature from the Black Lagoon”, antes de dedicarse al cine.
Luego apareció en decenas de películas y espectáculos televisivos, entre ellos “The Lone Ranger”, “Bonanza”, “Charlie's Angels”, “Mission: Impossible”, y “Star Trek".
Protagonizó también a Lt. Lou Escobar en “Chinatown”, en 1974, junto a Jack Nicholson y Faye Dunaway.
López repitió su papel en la continuación de 1990, “The Two Jakes”, que dirigió y también protagonizó Nicholson.
Durante su carrera de 40 años, compartió la pantalla con Jack Palance, Clint Eastwood, Omar Sharif, Barbara Eden, Elvis Presley y John Wayne.

ALAIN ROBBE-GRILLET

Writer Alain Robbe-Grillet died of heart illness at age 85. Mr. Robbe-Grillet co-wrote with director Alain Resnais the still baffling and influential " Last Year at Marienbad ." The 1960 film was Mr. Resnais' second film. Audiences at the time and audiences today remain divided over the powerful enigmatic film. Harry Medved listed it in his book " The 50 Worst Films: And How They Got That Way " while Steven Schneider includes it in his book " 1001 Movies You Must See Before You Die ." Mr. Robbe-Grillet was nominated for an Oscar for his screenplay. Mr. Robbe-Grillet wrote a number of novels which were turned into films. He also directed several films himself.

British actress Mary Barclay died at age 91. Ms. Barclay worked on Broadway, in film and TV. She appeared on Broadway in the 1950s in productions of " Witness for the Prosecution " and " T-Cog ." Ms. Barclay was known to British Soap Opera fans for her role on " Crossroads ." BEN CHAPMAN

Ben Chapman passed away at age 82. Mr. Chapman was one of the two actors to portray Universal's monster The Gill Man in the 1954 classic " Creature From the Black Lagoon ." Mr. Chapman played the Gill Man during the 'on land' scenes, while Ricou Browning played the monster in the underwater sequences. He reprised his role as the Gill Man on the " Colgate Comedy Hour " in a sketch with Abbott and Costello. The TV sketch actually aired before the film was released. Mr. Chapman was a favorite guest at fan conventions around the country. Other credits include " Pagan Love Song ," " Ma and Pa Keetle in Waikiki " and " Jungle Moon Men ." MR. Chapman served his country in the US Army during the Korean War.

Hong Kong actress and TV personality died of liver cancer at age 60. Mr. Sum appeared in over 100 films. She began acting while still in her teens. Ms. Sum's many credits include the action/comedy films " It's a Mad, Mad, Mad World " and " It's a Mad, Mad, Mad World 2 ." Other credits include " To All the Girls ," " In-Laws, Out-Laws ," " A Recipe for the Heart ," " Just Married " and " The Perfect Match ."
Lydia Shum Din-Ha, also known as Lydia Sum (July 21, 1945 — February 19, 2008), was a legendary Hong Kong comedian, MC, and actress known for her size, signature dark rimmed glasses and hairstyle. She was affectionately known to peers and fans as Fei-fei (literally Fat Fat or Fatty). She appeared in numerous Hong Kong films and was an iconic entertainer on TVB that spanned over forty years.
Shum died on February 19, 2008 of liver cancer, following a prolonged bout of complications related to a cholecystectomy done in 2002.
While she worked at Shaws Brothers, her popularity increased many folds when she became one of the first stakeholders at the up and coming TV-broadcast station TVB. In 1967 Shum's stardom began with the widely televised variety show Enjoy Yourself Tonight. She first sang in a Cantopop group known as the Four Golden Flowers and played a role as a Shanghai woman in the 1970s.She also partnered with Roman Tam in singing from 1971 to 1973.

TOM LANTOS

US Congressman Tom Lantos died of esophagus cancer at age 80. Mr. Lantos had served in congress for 17 years. He was the only survivor of the Holocaust to ever serve in the US Congress. Mr. Lantos' mother was murdered by the Nazis in Auschwitz. Tom lantos appeared as himself in the Oscar-winning documentary " The Last Days " as well as the documentary " To Bear Witness ." Vegas rocker Freddie Bell died of cancer at age 76. Freddie Bell's cover version of Big Mama Thorton's song " Hound Dog " inspired Elvis Presley to record the song. Freddie Bell and the Bellboys appeared in the films " Rock Around the Clock ," " Rumble on the Docks " and " Get Yourself a College Girl ." The band performed on " The Colgate Comedy Hour " and " The Ed Sullivan Show ."

Emmy-winning TV director Kirk Browning died at age 86. Mr. Browning directed over 150 episodes of " Live From Lincoln Center ." He was for 10 Emmy Awards for his work, winning twice. EMILIO CARBALLIDO
Died Feb. 11, 2008

El dramaturgo mexicano Emilio Carballido falleció la noche del lunes a los 83 años en la ciudad mexicana de Xalapa, en el estado de Veracruz, donde nació, confirmaron colaboradores suyos.

El autor de novelas como Las visitaciones del diablo (1965) falleció de un paro respiratorio.

Carballido nació en Córdoba, en el estado oriental de Veracruz, el 22 de mayo 1925 y estudió en la Facultad de Filosofía y Letras en la Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM), en la capital.

La amplia obra literaria del escritor incluye dos tomos de cuentos, nueve novelas, más de cien obras de teatro y cincuenta guiones para cine.

También fue fundador y director de la revista Tramoya , editada por la Universidad Veracruzana, y director de la Escuela de Arte Teatral del Instituto de Bellas Artes.

Críticos mexicanos como Christopher Domínguez lo consideraban parte de una estirpe veracruzana muy importante a la que también pertenecen Sergio Pitol, Jorge López Páez, Sergio Galindo y Juan Vicente Melo.

Carballido recibió el Premio Nacional de Lingüística y Literatura y fue Artista Emérito del Sistema Nacional de Creadores de Arte del Fondo de Cultura y Artes (Fonca) de México. Fue académico de la lengua de México desde 1976.

Entre sus obras que se representaron en más de quince países destacan El águila descalza y Macario, Felicidad y Díaz de Otoño .

En marzo del año pasado, Carballido y Héctor Herrera se convirtieron en una de las primeras parejas de la capital mexicana en registrar oficialmente su unión aprovechando la promulgación de la denominada Ley de Sociedades de Convivencia.

La normativa no es equiparable a un matrimonio, ni cambia el estatus civil del contrayente, pero sirvió para formalizar la relación entre Carballido y Herrera, 44 años menor.

Las exequias de Carballido se celebraron desde ayer en la misma Xalapa, la capital de Veracruz.
