High schooler Bartleby Gaines ("B" to his friends) is on his way to scoring a perfect eight out of eight college rejection letters-which isn't going to go over big with his parents. At least, he's not alone-several of his posse of oddball friends are in the same, college-less boat. What's a guy, facing down a lifetime career as a convenience store clerk, going to do? Created his own college, of course. B calls in some friendly favors-has a techie bud build a website, convinces another friend's burnout uncle to pose as the dean and organizes a clean-up/building party at a local abandoned mental hospital-and South Harmon Institute of Technology is born.

America Freedom To Fascism (2006)

But Senta's life and past are shrouded in mystery, and she tells him stories about herself that seem unbelievable. Then she declares that as proof of their love to each other, each of them should kill a total stranger. But is this just another of Senta's wild stories? And how far is Philippe willing to go, even as his love for her seems to know no limits?

BROTHERS OF THE HEAD (2006)

The odyssey of conjoined twins Tom and Barry Howe who were plucked from obscurity by a 1970s music promoter and groomed into a boy band. Grappling with impossible love, artistic rivalry, and a dark inner life, the twins embrace their freakishness and spit it back in the form of searing Punk Rock.

BEYOND THE SEA (2005) Mas alla del mar

It began with a bus crashing through the gates of an embassy in Havana and unraveled into one of the most dramatic episodes in the history of human migrations. In a few short weeks, nearly 130,000 Cubans left their homeland in an unrelenting stream of vessels bound for America. More than two decades later, the personal stories surrounding the Mariel Boatlift continue to resonate with an energy that can only be described as surreal, powerful.

BEEN RICH ALL MY LIFE (2006) - This documentary follows the most unlikely troupe of tap dancers you're likely to meet, the Silver Belles, five former showgirls who danced at the Apollo and other legendary Harlem venues in the 1930s-40s. It is little remembered that these young women led the historic first strike by African American performers. They walked out of the Apollo one Saturday night in a successful bid for higher wages and established the American Guild of Variety Artists, for black and white performers nationwide. The Silver Belles have rich stories to tell about the history they made dancing at Harlem's legendary venues--the Cotton Club, Connie's Inn, Small's Paradise. They toured the world, were honored abroad, and danced on the first black USO tour (when they stole the "for colored only" signs off the trains they rode in America's Jim Crow south). When the big band era ended, and with it the need for show dancers, they went into other work, until they put their shoes back on in 1985, and kept on dancing. Now aged 84 to 96, they have been performing together to standing ovations at places like Carnegie Hall for the past 20 years, as sassy as they ever were.

Boynton Beach Club
Based on a story by Seidelman's 74-year-old mother Florence, this is a romantic comedy about the human capacity to rebound and fall in love at any age. Lois, Harry, Marilyn, Sandy and Jack live in an "Active Adult" community in Boynton Beach, Florida. Their lives intersect when they meet at a local Bereavement Club where they go to find emotional support after the loss of a loved one. For anyone who thinks that new love and romance ends long before retirement, they're in for a reality check. No one sees themselves as becoming old, and the residents of Boynton Beach aren't about to start. But sometimes we all need a little reminder that life is worth living and sharing.

CHOKING MAN (2006)

Calvaire - Laurent Lucas plays lounge singer Marc Stevens, a handsome and affable chap who has his van break down between Christmastime gigs. Late at night, in the pouring rain, Marc unwisely heeds the advice of Belgian lunatic Boris and treks off into the night. He's looking for a well-off-the-beaten-path little hotel... and boy does he find it. Nestled firmly in the middle of Inbred County, Belgium, is the Hotel Bartel. The owner is a lonely little freak, but Marc thinks nothing of the dank desolation before settling in for an overnight stay. Mr. Bartel promises to have Marc's van up and running in short order, but we all know that's not very likely. Marc spends his afternoon wandering the countryside, and he soon comes across a barn in which several gibbering goons are having sex with livestock. He heads back to the hotel. Before too long, Marc realizes that Mr. Bartel (and the perpetually popping-up Boris) are more than a little off their respective rockers, and he decides to hit the road, period. Big mistake, Marc. Seems that the whacked-out hotel-master has grown, shall we say 'attached', to his current visitor. Thus begins a descent into nastiness that involves handcuffs, bear traps, shorn scalps and rape.

Conversations With Other Women - When a groomsman and bridesmaid flirt with each other at a wedding reception, the sexual tension seems spontaneous. But as the conversation deepens, their previous life togehter is revealed. They were in fact married and divorced years ago, yet deep feelings remain . . . As they break from the party to a hotel room, the flirtation turns into a night filled with passion and remorse. Shot with multiple cameras, the entire film will be presented in split screen. Often, as one character speaks on screen, we will see the reaction of the other character in the opposite screen. When the couple makes love on one screen, the other screen will show different angles or sometimes show them making love as young adults. When a character describes the past, a flashback may appear on the opposite screen. These contrasting perspectives will reveal how we all view the past and the present through different lenses.

Factotum (2005)
The life of celebrated wildman Charles Bukowski has been brought to the big screen on a number of occasions prior to this adaptation of his book, FACTOTUM. Most notably, Mickey Rourke played Bukowski's alter-ego Henry "Hank" Chinaski in 1987's BARFLY, while 2004’s BUKOWSKI: BORN INTO THIS was a fascinating documentary on the alcohol-fueled writer. This Norwegian production from director Bent Hamer sees Matt Dillon taking on the role of Chinaski. Dillon gets the character just about right, subtly perfecting the deadbeat behavior that leads to innumerable firings from menial jobs, while also offering a persuasive depiction of a man lost in the throes of an addiction to booze, women, and gambling. The crumbs of plot that do exist in FACTOTUM find Chinaski enjoying the sexual wiles of poverty-stricken Jan (Lily Taylor) and rich-girl Laura (Marisa Tomei), but essentially the film is all about one man's long, low meander through a sedentary life. The alcohol frequently gets the better of Chinaski, destroying his chances of becoming a writer, obliterating his job prospects, and curtailing his relationships.

FRATRICIDE
A prize-winner on the international festival circuit, "Fratricide" is an elegantly shot, gripping drama of young Kurds and Turks relocated to Germany where they hope to escape the tribal violence and poverty of their homeland. Instead, they find themselves strangers in a strange land: inhabitants of a soulless society where prostitution, street violence and prejudice offer no respite from the past. The friendship that evolves between one young man and the youngster he attempts to mentor suggests that love and loyalty are one's best hope against bitterness and rage. But the harsh reality of refugee life in Western Europe that "Fratricide" unflinchingly portrays subverts even their best instincts.

FLAGS OF OUR FATHERS (2006)
February 1945. Even as victory in Europe was finally within reach, the war in the Pacific raged on. One of the most crucial and bloodiest battles of the war was the struggle for the island of Iwo Jima, which culminated with what would become one of the most iconic images in history: five Marines and a Navy corpsman raising the American flag on Mount Suribachi. The inspiring photo capturing that moment became a symbol of victory to a nation that had grown weary of war and made instant heroes of the six American soldiers at the base of the flag, some of whom would die soon after, never knowing that they had been immortalized. But the surviving flag raisers had no interest in being held up as symbols and did not consider themselves heroes; they wanted only to stay on the front with their brothers in arms who were fighting and dying without fanfare or glory. 'Flags of Our Fathers' is based on the bestselling book by James Bradley with Ron Powers, which chronicled the battle of Iwo Jima and the fates of the flag raisers and some of their brothers in Easy Company.

HARRY POTTER AND THE ORDER OF THE PHOENIX (2007)

What's it entail this time? "It's a big blue-screen battle for a lot of it so that will be a laugh...I think I'm involved in the big battle. I torture myself by always trying to be interesting and human on screen, but every now and again it's great to be in 'Harry Potter' and just rip it up and be as singularly evil and unpleasant as possible.

HALF NELSON (2006) - Ryan Fleck returns to Sundance with Half Nelson, a feature-length version of his Jury Prize-winning short, Gowanus, Brooklyn, that looks at an unlikely friendship that brings hope to a man trapped by his own demons. Dan Dunne is an idealistic inner-city junior high school teacher. Though he can get it together in the classroom, he spends his time outside school on the edge of consciousness. He juggles his hangovers and his homework, keeping his lives precariously separated, until one of his troubled students, Drey, catches him in a compromising situation. From this awkward beginning, Dan and Drey stumble into an unexpected friendship that threatens either to undo them, or to provide the vital change they both need to move forward in their lives. Half Nelson neither condemns nor sanctions Dan's actions, but rather depicts characters who are "wrestling" with various aspects of themselves and their roles in the larger world around them. Ryan Gosling perfectly renders Dan, imbuing him with layers and dimensions rarely seen in film. Equally exciting is newcomer Shareeka Epps's performance as Drey; she displays a remarkable ability to convey both wisdom and innocence.

Invincible (2006)
From the studio that brought you "The Rookie" and "Remember The Titans" comes INVINCIBLE, inspired by the true story of Vince Papale (MARK WAHLBERG), a man with nothing to lose who ignored the staggering odds and made his dream come true. When the coach (GREG KINNEAR) of Papale's beloved hometown football team hosted an unprecedented open tryout, the public consensus was that it was a waste of time -- no one good enough to play professional football was going to be found this way. Certainly no one like Papale -- a down-on-his-luck, 30 year-old, substitute teacher and part-time bartender who never even played college football. But against these odds, Papale made the team and soon found himself living every fan's fantasy -- moving from his cheap seats in the upper deck to standing on the field as a professional football player.

Jailbait (2006) - Acclaimed playwright Brett C. Leonard makes his feature-film debut as the writer and director of the prison drama, Jailbait, which was inspired, in part, by Leonard's feelings about mandatory sentencing laws. Randy (Michael Pitt of The Dreamers) is a young prisoner, recently sentenced to 25 years. His new cellmate is Jake (Stephen Adly-Guirgis, also a respected New York playwright, and the star of Todd Solondz's Palindromes), a hardened lifer. Randy seems despondent, and is reluctant to speak to Jake at all, but the older con gives him a book to read and is generous with advice. Gradually, Randy opens up. He's been convicted of vandalizing an expensive car. The sentence was severe because it was his third offense. His other two convictions were for possession of large quantities of marijuana. But Jake refuses to feel sorry for Randy, telling him that he was stupid for committing another crime when he knew his situation. Eventually, Jake's friendly cajoling turns to bullying. By the time Randy's mother (Laila Robins) comes to visit him, he has to hide the visible signs of Jake's abuse. When Randy's efforts to regain control of his prison life are thwarted, he considers taking more drastic action. Jailbait had its world premiere at the 2004 Tribeca Film Festival.

Lunacy (2006)
The latest provocation from surrealist master Jan Svankmajer ("Little Otik") is loosely based on two short stories by Edgar Allen Poe and inspired by the works of the Marquis de Sade. In nineteenth-century France (albeit one full of deliberate anachronisms) a young man, Jean Berlot, is plagued by nightmares in which he is dragged off to a madhouse. On the journey back from his mother's funeral he is invited by a Marquis he meets at lunch to spend the night in his castle. There Berlot witnesses a blasphemous orgy and a 'therapeutic' funeral. Berlot tries to flee but the Marquis insists on helping him conquer his fears and takes his guest to a surrealistic lunatic asylum where the patients have complete freedom and the staff are locked up behind bars. Described by Svankmajer himself in a prologue to the film as a "philosophical horror film," "Lunacy" combines live action and stop-motion, sex and violence, grand guignol terror and gallows humor, and a lot of animated meat.

THIS FILM IS NOT YET RATED (2006) - The independent film community has constantly debated the role of the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) over the past several years. The issues of piracy, ratings, and the unequal treatment of independent filmmakers (as opposed to the member companies of the MPAA) are all at the forefront of this ongoing discussion. Fimmaker Kirby Dick leaps into the fray with This Film Is Not Yet Rated, a provocative and cogent inquiry into these issues and more. Analyzing, examining, questioning, and, most critically, investigating the MPAA, Dick asks whether studios get different treatment, why violence and sex are treated so disparately, and, most interestingly, why the MPAA ratings must operate behind a veil of secrecy. This censoring process is commented on by filmmakers ranging from John Waters to Kevin Smith, from Kimberly Peirce to Darren Aronofsky, as Dick examines why filmmakers are left in the dark about what triggers an NC-17 and who and what the MPAA represents.
